So, if you’re down to be stressed for anywhere between 90 minutes to three hours, this list of movies is guaranteed to give you enough anxiety and creeping thrills that you may even forget the worries of the world for a moment. If only to work out exactly what the hell is going on.Luckily for us, we live in the age of overstuffed streaming services. Like an Agatha Christie whodunnit that exists wholly in the connective tissue between alternate dimensions, this is a twisted quantum chamber piece of meta-doppelgangers and sliding doors moments – if those sliding doors had the potential to cause major injury – that will more than likely inspire repeat viewings. It’s no San Junipero or USS Callister, but it doesn’t lag far behind. Squint a little, and perhaps viewed through one’s fingers and from a strange angle behind the nearest sofa, and Coherence could easily be a one-off feature-length episode plucked from Black Mirror. And yet the discovery of new boxes with differently numbered photographs and random objects suggests almost all the partygoers have their own reason to be slipping out the door at the optimum moment. Guests keep coming up with new excuses to leave the house and head out into the night, like a cheesy 80s horror flick in which everyone is determined to split up and get immediately murdered by something bestial. The intrigue stems from an increasing realisation that some of the company are trying to game their new reality. This is a science fiction story that could easily be performed on stage, so limited are the locations. And yet Byrkit’s mis-en-scène is far more contained and claustrophobic than Lars von Trier’s whimsical fantasy. There are also shades here of Melancholia, which came out two years previously and featured a mysterious new planet that exerts strange influences on the people of Earth. The result is reminiscent of the “found footage” subgenre that was once so popular in Hollywood, but without the ridiculous contrivance of that style that requires the viewer to believe that obsessive amateur videographers are lurking around every corner to document the moment. The spectre of Schrödinger’s cat looms sphinx-like over the entire proceedings – did everyone accidentally dab too much of the aforementioned dubious keta-tincture?īyrkit shoots and edits the whole thing as if we are witnessing a particularly phantasmagorical reality TV show, complete with shaky cameras, the odd blurry shot, and characters talking over each other, along with sudden cuts to black. Em meets Kevin at their car, but there is something about him she doesn’t quite recognise, while nobody seems to be able to escape from this dark and discombobulating purgatory. Inside one of the other homes, they have glimpsed a group of people who look remarkably like themselves. The pair who departed soon return with a strange box containing Polaroid-style photographs of each of the party guests, and a set of numbers written on the back, along with an apparently innocuous table tennis paddle. So far, so stereotypical cabin in the woods scenario, and yet standard horror tropes are soon swapped out for far more cerebral sci-fi stylings. Two of the partygoers begin investigating nearby homes to try to establish if anyone in the neighbourhood has a working telephone. The evening begins amicably enough, but then a power cut puts the wind up the party guests, shutting down wifi and, apparently, mobile phone connectivity. It is clear that Mike (Nicholas Brendon) has a drinking problem, while another guest, Beth, has a bizarre habit of offering ketamine-laced tincture to anyone who fancies it, which may or may not be adding to the general sense of dysphoria and dislocation. There are tensions from the start: Em (Emily Baldoni) has turned down her boyfriend Kevin’s request to join him on a work trip to Vietnam, and is nervous that his vampy ex Laurie has also been invited along to the gathering. The film-maker’s 2013 debut centres on eight friends who gather for a dinner party in a California home on the night that a comet is due to pass by.

The resulting sound I got using this advice was what I would describe as hollow. The wrong advice says to amplify that sound at the computer or in your software. That avoids picking up too much background sound, but then the audio is really quiet and almost unusable. Most of the advice I found online says to turn the gain knob on the Yeti down to the absolute minimum. I know because I bought one for my own podcasting and video streaming and had a hard time getting good sound with it. They pick up too much background noise even when the gain is turned way down. They do have a big drawback of being overly sensitive. Yeti Blue microphones are widely popular for podcasting and home sound recording. The microphone is easy to use, reasonable in price, and doesn’t require additional software. And from first use, I have not regretted my microphone decision. I couldn’t find another microphone which offered the range that the Blue Yeti microphone did for the same price. When choosing a microphone for recording the sound for my online courses, I went for the Blue Yeti microphone because of this variety of settings available. I wanted to upgrade the level of sound which I was delivering to my students, and with this, I wanted to invest in a professional microphone. However, as I continued to create online courses, I felt that these options weren’t really hitting the mark. In fact, to my untrained ear I felt that the sound provided was reasonably good. When I first started out creating videos for online courses, I used two microphones: the one which is in-built in my MacBook Air, and the one of my iPhone. If you have videos on your online course, it is highly likely that you will need a microphone to record your sound. Are there other options I should be looking at? When I went to their website, I saw that that they also offer Remote, a tethered shooting solution. It was, as expected, somewhat slow with a 49 image NEF stack, and reasonably good despite a few oddities that might have been due to my Z6 stacking settings (probably should have included more 'far' shots that I deleted before further processing and a few closer shots.įrom my reading, it appears that Helicon Focus would be a better tool for macro focus stacking. It seems very useful despite some learning curve about setting optimal stack parameters. I finally got around to initial testing of focus stacking with my Z6. In the poem, the narrator/singer Giovannino 9 speaks in the first person, conjuring and impersonating a ‘Zingara indovina’ who mocks a motley crew of Turks, dwarves, and buffoons - a group that Buonaccorsi calls the ‘mal’Cristiani’ of the court, most of whom I have identified with contemporary historical figures. His sharp critique and witty wordplay place his Black body at the very center of Italian court life. In this chapter I celebrate the subtlety and sophistication of Buonaccorsi’s poetry. 8 But we need not perpetuate such assumptions. Contemporary Italian authors often made such assumptions or traded in their familiarity, representing the speech of Black characters with a thick stage dialect, discussed at some length in the central part of this chapter. But grammatical errors can only be used as evidence for Black authorship if we presume an incapacity to write and speak correctly on the part of Black humans. According to the traditional logics of musicological practice, the authorial attribution to Buonaccorsi would seem more convincing were I able to point to mistakes in the text: mistakes would prove the foreignness of the author and might illustrate a reliance on spoken dialect or foreign words. The purportedly neutral skepticism of academic practice requires a higher burden of proof for exceptions to the straight, white, male model, insisting on the foreignness of the enslaved Black man and presuming his incapacity. The more time I spent with the poem, however, the more convinced I became of Buonaccorsi’s authorial claim, and more importantly, the more deeply and uncomfortably I became aware that the strongest (perhaps only) counterargument against his authorship implicitly relies on the color of his skin. In earlier drafts of this chapter I hedged my claims of Buonaccorsi’s authorship with words like ‘presumed’, ‘possibly’, ‘potential’, and located my conclusions in the safely deferred linguistic fiction of the subjunctive: ‘if Buonaccorsi were the author, then…’. Such pitfalls are familiar (to musicologists, at least) from the history of scholarship on female musicians: the music is good for a girl we only study this because there were no other women composers this specific piece attributed to her is particularly good from which I assume her brother wrote it. 7 It is easy to presume that any interest in the work of art is motivated by the intersecting identity categories of author and scholar, and if it can be shown that the art was authored by someone else, even if sufficient doubt can be thrown on the attribution, the value of historical person, scholarly reputation, and published scholarship crumbles (and associated political ideologies devalued). The figure of a Black, enslaved, seventeenth-century (quite possibly castrated) Italian poet is difficult to extricate from the logic of exceptionalism, by which the scholarly authority of arguments, analysis, inferences, and conclusions - not to mention the historical, scholarly, and pedagogical value of the work of art - rests on the single claim of authorship. To make a further claim for Black authorship is bold, indeed. Within academia the work of documenting the historical presence of Black Africans, slaves, and other racialized minorities within early modern Europe (as Kaplan long has done) has itself been seen as a radical and often destabilizing project. Buonaccorsi was one of a considerable number of Black African and Middle-Eastern Muslim and newly Christianized court retainers who arrived in Florence under conditions of enslavement, and his very presence in Italy testifies to an endemic practice of Italian slavery with which scholars are only recently beginning to grapple. They neatly sidestep the qualifications and disavowals that typically shield such assertions from the charge of overreaching. 6 They do so with a rather pleasurable naiveté - assigning authorship to the most obvious contender as if he were not Black, or a slave as if he were an autonomous subject fully capable of artistic endeavor. 5 Both previous scholars to have mentioned the poem - the art historians Alessandro Grassi and Paul Kaplan, each of whom consider the poem in relation to the Volterrano painting shown as Figure 6.2 - also attribute authorship to Buonaccorsi. 3 Buonaccorsi is often identified in contemporary sources by the name Giovannino Moro, Giovannino il Moro, or merely il Moro 4 and thus can be associated with the poem by the title alone. 2 Throughout this chapter, I attribute authorship of the ‘Sogno’ to the enslaved Black chamber singer Giovannino Buonaccorsi, who was active at the Medici court between 1651 and his death on August 15, 1674. The poem, ‘Sogno di Giovannino Moro’, survives in a single manuscript copy, undated and unattributed, in the Medicean archives in Florence the first page is shown as Figure 6.1. Whatever you may think of the film as a whole, this part is brilliant. It is the kind of movie that will inspire (mostly) men of a certain age (I am guessing 15 to 55). His inchworm contortions are amazing, and this is really only half the performance, because he only degrades when he reaches home and gets in a fight with an equally quaaluded Jonah Hill. The Wolf of Wall Street is going to be a monstrous hit. However, DiCaprio’s acrobatics trying to reach and operate his car when a metric ton of quaaludes hit his system is, by far, the film’s best scene. I remember thinking it wasnt that amazing tho. Martin Scorsese once revealed that his experience of taking Quaaludes at least partially inspired the scene in The Wolf of Wall Street in which Leonardo DiCaprio freaks out after taking the drug. At least for me I got nothing from the first 2 then suddenly youre out of it. When you think “physical comedy”, Leonardo DiCaprio is not a name that springs to the fore.
